Thunder July Struggle Continues
Posting Date: July 24 2011

Augustine Dashiell

BOWIE (MD) – The July swoon continued for the Trenton Thunder as the Maryland Baysox erased an early two-run deficit in a 6-4 victory Saturday at Prince George’s Stadium.

The Thunder (52-48) grabbed an early 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the second inning off Bowie (55-43) starter Timothy Bascom. Alert base running by Melky Mesa produced the first run of the contest. Standing on first after being hit by a pitch, Mesa took off on contact off the bat of Zoilo Almonte. Almonte’s line drive to left field found room under LJ Hoes’ glove and allowed the speedy Mesa time to motor around the bases for the Thunder’s first run. Almonte scored later on a Damon Sublet single.

Bowie took a lead in the fourth inning via the long ball as Steven Lerud

and Brandon Waring back-to-back blasts sparked a four-run rally.

Rob Lyerly led the sixth inning with a solo homerun to right-centerfield, his third of the season. Later in the inning, Jose Pirela scored Zoilo Almonte from third base on a sacrifice fly to left and tied the score at 4-4.

Bowie scratched across runs in the sixth and eighth inning as Trenton fell for the 16th time in 21 July games.

The Thunder wrap their four-game series with the Bowie Baysox on Sunday evening at 6:05 PM from Prince George’s Stadium. Lefty Shaeffer Hall (8-4, 4.06) takes the mound for the the Thunder, while Bowie counters with RHP Oliver Drake (1-1, 9.37). Sunday’s SBLI Pre-game show with Hank Fuerst begins at 5:50 PM.
