Posting Date: July 31 2011
TRENTON – Shaeffer Hall earned his tenth win of the season behind a 17-run offensive explosion as the Trenton Thunder spanked the Richmond Flying Squirrels 17-5 Saturday night at Waterfront Park. The Thunder’s 17 runs matched the output of the New York Yankees 17-run demolition of the Baltimore Orioles in MLB action.
Yadil Mujica’s two-run single highlighted a four-run first inning that saw nine Thunder (57-50) batters see time at the plate. Pitching with the early lead, Hall (10-4, 4.13) breezed through the first two innings until running into trouble in the third inning. Richmond (59-48) touched Shaeffer for four runs on five hits with the big hit coming off the bat of Roger Kieschnick. Kieschnick blasted his 20th home run of the season and temporarily tied the game.
Mujica struck again in the bottom of the third inning with another two-run single and then with two men on, Addison Maruszak crushed his sixth home run of the season. The blast gave Trenton a 5-4 lead that they never relinquished.
The Thunder conclude their four-game set with the Richmond Flying Squirrels at Waterfront Park on Sunday at 1:05 PM. Lefty Steve Garrison (3-6, 6.26) handles the pitching duties for the Thunder while the Squirrels counter with fellow lefty Clayton Tanner (3-8, 4.50). The SBLI Pre-Game Show with Jay Burnham and Hank Fuerst begins at 12:45 PM. Tune-in to the game online at trentonthunder.com.
