Dii 'Jon Allen-Jordan finishes a dunk against Asbury
TOMS RIVER - Plainfield battled back for a 68-53 victory in their quarterfinal game of the Tournament of Champions against Asbury Park. Last year the teams met in the same round of the tournament, Plainfield dominated that game holding Asbury Park to 32 percent shooting from the field and 35 points for the game. Plainfield won that matchup going away but Asbury Park’s Head Coach Dave Johnson remembered what happened in the second quarter last year and revisited his strategy. Plainfield won Wednesday night at the Pine Belt Arena, but the game was much closer and provided moments of trepidation for the heavy favorites.
“In the past two or three games we fell into the other team’s trap and dug a hole for ourselves,” Senior Dii ‘Jon Allen-Jordan said.
Coach Johnson used full court pressure and the outstanding one-on-one abilities of twins Armond and Amir Conover and built an early double-digit lead. The Conover duo combined for 32 points, 12 rebounds, and six assists as Asbury Park shot 47 percent from the floor. This was the second consecutive game in which Plainfield spotted a team from the Jersey Shore a commanding lead.
"They were relentless, they came after us and did the things they do well, which is slash and use their fast jumping ability,” Plainfield Head Coach, Jeff Lubreski said.
Plainfield roared back with a 13-4 run that placed them a bucket away from the lead. As the teams battled nip and tuck for the rest of the half, Plainfield eventually took a lead into the half on the strength of an advantage from the foul line.
Plainfield focused on their inside game in the second half, Jahmal Lane, Justin Sears, and Allen-Jordan attacked the lane with drives and strong finishes. Allen-Jordan’s dunks swung the momentum in Plainfield’s favor as they opened a 14-point lead in the final period.
Players of the Game:
Plainfield – Jahmal Lane scored a game high 21 points
Asbury Park – Armond Conover scored a team high 18 points.
