Jessica Kroepfl sacks Laura Burd for the Justice

CARTERET (NJ) – In dominating fashion, the Jersey Justice combined a smothering defense and exceptional offensive execution in outclassing the Central Pennsylvania Vipers 34-0 in IWFL action Saturday night.

Defensively, the Justice set the tone early forcing fumbles on the first two Viper offensive plays, with Jessica Kroepfl recovering the second fumble just outside the red zone.

The Justice wasted little time cashing in on the field position, using five running plays before Meagan Larsen sped in from three yards out.

On the next Viper possession, the defensive line, led by Kroepfl and Danielle Barker, pressured Laura Burd on three consecutive plays. Kroepfl registered a sack and Barker hit Burd on the other two attempts, forcing the three and out.

Again operating with the short field, Coach Gene Basile called the perfect play, a double move on first down, but Larsen missed a streaking Leslie Busch down the right sideline. Undaunted the Justice marched 55 yards with the big play coming off a 23-yard pass to Busch, setting up the Larsen touchdown run.

The Justice’s defensive dominance continued after a blitzing Lauren O’Conner registered a sack; Michelle Burke intercepted a tipped pass and streaked untouched 25 yards, giving the Justice a 22-0 lead heading into the half.

“I warned the team about playing at our level, establishing what we do, and executing. Never to let our effort and execution drop, no matter what the score of the game may be,” Coach Basile said.

Taking Basile’s advice, the Justice needed four plays in sealing the game. A 40-yard run on an option pitch by Mary Byrne set the Justice up at the 9-yard line. The next play Larsen connected with Vanessa Fernandez for the 28-0 lead.

Even with the big lead, the Justice kept up the defensive pressure. Larsen read a slant route perfectly and intercepted a Burd pass going into the final period.

The Justice focused on developing a power running game as Coach Basile began to rest his regulars. This presented opportunities for Laurie Fitzpatrick at running back. Fitzpatrick responded by rushing for 28 yards and the final touchdown of the game.

Next, the Justice travel to Baltimore for their final road game of the season against the Baltimore Nighthawks (1-3). The Nighthawks are a Tier I team, and the Justice look to build ratings points in their push for the playoffs in their inaugural season.
