NEW BRUNSWICK (NJ) – Sometimes, playing to win can backfire on a team. The Long Island Ravens found this to be true as the New Jersey Warriors pulled out a 12-6 last second victory in the final game of the Hub City Classic.
With the score tied 6-6 late in the fourth quarter, the Ravens took possession of the ball at their own 27-yard line. A 14-yard run by Levon Mosley moved the ball out to the 41-yard line. Two incomplete passes made it third down, and then “it” happened.
Ravens quarterback Travis Jynx rolled to his right looked downfield and let fly the “Hail Mary” that turned into an “Oh No”. Waiting at his 25-yard line, was Warriors cornerback NaQuan Jenkins, who gathered the errant pass and weaved his way 75 yards for the winning score.
In a game, where offensive production was at a minimum for the Warriors it is a good thing Jenkins housed the final interception. The Warriors’ offense only mustered 42 yards in the game as they struggled with penalties and missed assignments.
In the first, half both offenses sputtered, but the Warrior defense that made a game changing play. Defensive end Dre Gill recovered a punt that ricocheted off one of the Ravens' players giving the Warriors 1st and goal on the Ravens 6-yard line. Quarterback Gene White would sneak it in from a yard out.
The Ravens would answer in the third quarter with a 12-play drive that ate up over 12 minutes. Using a powerful running game, which finished with 176 yards, the Ravens got down to the Warriors’ 14-yard line before stalling. On fourth down, Jynx hit wide receiver Jamaal Salah for the touchdown.
Jenkins earned the MVP honor for the Warriors, while running back Darryl McKlintock garnered the award for the Ravens.
